Getting a new Puppy or Kitten?

Awww, Lucky You! Here are a few Good Things to Know.

Your new puppy or kitten makes a great addition to your family, and you want to have fun with your furry baby! But first, you must get them off to a great start by taking them for a pet wellness exam. At Harvest Pointe Animal Hospital in Edmonton, we love your babies too, and we want to ensure their good health so that they can lead a long life with you.

Why Do Puppies and Kittens Need Exams?

Taking your puppy and kitten for a wellness exam at an animal hospital can help you take care of them to the best of your abilities. Not all pet owners realize it, but young pets (especially small mammals) have a greater susceptibility to diseases and pet parasites than their adult counterparts. Puppies and kittens also have different dietary needs than adult pets and should eat the right food for their ages. They require lots of good nutrition for strong bones, healthy coats and lots of protein to give them all the energy they need. Young pets also have a greater sensitivity to drugs and poisons.

What Does a New Pet Wellness Exam Include at Our Animal Hospital?

A new pet wellness exam for your puppy care and kitten care includes a thorough physical inspection in which a vet checks them from nose to tail. He or she will examine the animal’s coat, eyes, ears, teeth, abdomen and listen to their heart. This assessment helps a veterinarian to spot any abnormalities that a pet owner may overlook. You can also expect the administration of parasite control for your new pet. Young pets can get very sick quickly if they have fleas, worms, or other intestinal parasites. Your little one can be treated for all parasites if they already have them and put on a parasite control to prevent getting ill. You can request spay or neuter procedures when you first take your puppy or kitten to the vet, and we can discuss an individualized timeline to have this procedure done. Your pet will also receive any vaccinations they may need, and we can provide you with a schedule to keep additional shots on track.

What Other Items Can a Well Puppy or Kitten Checkup Provide?

You may want your new family member to have some sort of identification if they escape from you and become lost. You can simply use a pet collar with a tag on it with your name, address and phone number, or you may choose to have a microchip implanted under your pet’s skin for identification purposes. You can also ask your vet about other pet concerns, such as behavioural and nutritional counselling and pet health insurance to protect your new pet friend!
